Elm
A picture-perfect mountain village! The centre of Elm in the Sernftal Valley is designated a listed monument. But time doesn’t stand still: a top-class ski resort has opened up the charming surroundings. Here, the skiing elite matches at European and World Cup races. It is not a surprise that Vreni Schneider – hailing from Elm – won thrice Olympic Gold in slalom and giant slalom: She has an ideal exercise area directly in front of her door.
The wide slopes of the mountains Freiberge are the oldest wildlife sanctuary of Switzerland. During the winter month, the area turns into a varied winter sports resort. Twice a year, a very special natural spectacle takes place in Elm: When the sky is clear, the sunlight falls through the "Martin’s hole" – a rocky window in the Mount Tschingelhorn – exactly on the steeple of the gothic church of Elm.
A museum recalls the General Suworow, who stopped over here in 1799 during the fallback from the French, and the fate of his troop: many soldiers perished by cold on the snow-covered pass.
